Plays & Scripts

Candide is a satirical novella written by French philosopher and writer Voltaire. The story follows the adventures of Candide, a naive and optimistic young man who is taught by his tutor, Pangloss, that this world is the ""best of all possible worlds"". Candide's beliefs are challenged when he is expelled from his home and embarks on a journey that takes him across Europe, South America, and Africa. Along the way, he experiences a series of misfortunes, including being enslaved, witnessing natural disasters, and encountering corrupt officials and religious leaders. Despite these hardships, Candide remains determined to find happiness and reunite with his love interest, Cungonde. Through Candide's journey, Voltaire uses satire to criticize various aspects of society, including religion, politics, and philosophy. The novella is known for its witty and humorous style, as well as its commentary on the human condition and the concept of optimism. Despite its controversial nature, Candide has become a classic of French literature and a staple of philosophical discourse. How is it possible that the lovely Candide and the sage Pangloss should be at Lisbon, the one to receive a hundred lashes, and the other to be hanged by order of My Lord Inquisitor, of whom I am so great a favorite? Pangloss deceived me most cruelly, in saying that everything is for the best.'This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
